A Grammy Award winner comes to the Surf Club!

ZYDECO MUSIC LEGEND GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Free Performance to pay tribute to the late Roy Carrier by Grammy Award Winning Artist Chubby Carrier

Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band are bringing their Grammy-award winning brand of swamp-funky zydeco music to the East Coast. During this rare East Coast appearance, Carrier will take a night to pay a special tribute to his Dad, pioneering zydeco legend Roy Carrier, with a fan appreciation party at Surf Club Live, in Edmonston, Maryland.

During his lengthy career, the elder Roy developed a large and devoted fan base on the East Coast, and Surf Club Live was a regular gig. Chubby says, “Since my father’s death in 2010, his fans have expressed tremendous love and support to our family.” To show his gratitude, Chubby will pay tribute to his Dad by giving a free show. “I want to show the fans how much I appreciate them supporting my dad.” Carrier says.

When Roy played Surf Club Live, the place just pulsated with the energy of his music. The Washington Post described Roy’s signature style as a “raucous and relentless invitation to dance. “ “That’s what Chubby promises this night will be,” added Wayne Kahn, Roy’s long-time friend and producer. If you are a fan or even if you have never heard zydeco before, this is a night not to be missed.

Come on out and rock a little bit to celebrate what would have been Buddy Holly's 75th birthday! The venue is that great vintage road house, The Surf Club. In operation since back in Buddy's time, this is best place around for this kind of thing!
Hosted by Holly-specialist J.P. McDermott and his band, Western Bop. Also scheduled to appear are David Kitchen, Andy Rutherford, The Jelly Roll Mortals, The Spectacles, Hangover Royale, and more!

Thanks to the town of Edmonston and the Prince Georges County ABC Board, the Surf Club was granted a temporary permit to host live shows next week 8/25-8/27. DC Blues Society Ronnie Baker Brooks, The Hank Williams Tribute show, and the Beatnik Flies reunion show with the Yachtsmen and Bobby Belfiore! I look forward to meeting w/Edmonston officials next week to continue to build our relationship and hopefully have more shows!

Ronnie Baker Brooks makes his first ever appearance at the Surf Club and its sure to be one to remember! When he debuted with GOLDDIGGER in 1998, much of the blues world was already familiar with Ronnie Baker Brooks via his long apprenticeship as bandleader for living legend patriarch, Lonnie Brooks. His primal effort helped him earn a WC Handy Award nomination for “Best New Blues Artist” and enough encouragement from fans and media to light the runway for takeoff of a successful solo career.

The shows that were scheduled for this weekend at the Surf Club are cancelled and will be rescheduled for a future date. Due to a clerical error on the Surf Club’s liquor license (a box was not checked on the application), the Surf Club is unable to have live band entertainment at the moment. I am happy to be working with the town of Edmonston in an effort to renew the application of our long-standing entertainment license and once again host your favorite Americana roots bands. I am sorry for this inconvenience and the disruption that it causes. I hope to have this matter resolved as quickly as possible. Thank you.

David Kitchen (Vocals, Guitar): Dave is a published songwriter and has written and performed music for television and film (“Wild Iris”). He teaches guitar and produced American Song's debut CD. Dave has been nominated many times for Washington Area Music Association (WAMMIE) awards, including best Roots Rock Vocalist and Musician of the Year-2001. Robbie Magruder (Drums): Robbie is another long time veteran of the DC area. Andy Rutherford (Guitar, Vocals, Slide): Andy is another veteran sideman of the DC scene. He has played with Ruthie and The Wranglers, Little Pink, J.P. McDermott & Western Bop and Zydeco Crayz among others. Andy has been nominated for several WAMMIEs as well.

Stacy was nominated for a WAMMIE Award for Female Blues Vocalist 2009 - 2010 and a WAMMIE Award Blues Recording for her "Live @ The Surf Club" CD in 2009 by the Washington Area Music Association in 2009 and 2010. With her diverse background she continues to give you toe tapping, head bobbing feel good music that crosses all barriers. After forming The Stacy Brooks Band in February 2007, she was nominated for "New Artist of the Year" by The Washington Area Music Association. Since she began her quest of the blues she has been working non-stop up and down the east coast bridging the age gap on the blues circuit and importing fans from other genres. The CrawStickers instrumentation includes vocals, sax, guitar, bass, drums, and often, piano. Extra horn players are always a possibility. We pass around the vocal duty throughout the band, and sometimes several of us chime in together. That, along with our ability to cover a wide variety of types of music, is one of the things that gives us some extra zip and helps keep things interesting. We like to mix up the styles, with an emphasis on stuff that makes you want to move. People seem to really dig our set lists, which include a few originals.

"Moonshine Society gave, again in my opinion, the consistently best set of the night. Black Betty, despite the pin-up girl schtick (no, seriously, there are pin-up photos on the band‘s Web site) has a strong voice, tons of personality, and a tight grip on the material, which is more rhythm and blues-sounding than many blues bands, with rolling gospel-chord changes more reminiscent of Ray Charles than Howlin‘ Wolf, and definitely more sophisticated. Stuff like “Feel Like Breaking Up Some-body‘s Home”, covered by everyone from Etta James to Bette Midler, and a slow blues called “Better than This” stood out. The guitar player, Joe Poppen (photo at right, with Black Betty), was the last big discovery of the night fluid, tasteful, sophisticated, articulate, intelligent. He got a spongy, Robert-Cray-type tone from his Strat that sonically fit perfectly with this tight ensemble, and yet his playing is far more interesting than Cray‘s paint-by-numbers approach to soloing."

16 year old Andy Poxon has been performing around the MD-VA-DC area since 2008. He performs regularly with the Andy Poxon Band and with Hot Rods and Old Gas, and has also performed with Dave Chappell, Daryl Davis, Pete Ragusa (formerly of The Nighthawks), The Nighthawks, Mary Shaver, Greg Phillips, The Idle Americans, Scott Ramminger and the Crawstickers, Robert Fiester, Billy Thompson, Clarence “The Bluesman” Turner, Waverly Milor, Lisa Lim, and Tony Fazio.

Andy is also in the South River High School jazz ensemble, and in 2009 was the guitarist for the Anne Arundel County All-County Jazz Band. In August 2009, he won first place in the Youth Arts Forum young artists cover contest for his interpretation of “Don’t Burn Down That Bridge.” Influences range from Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Keb Mo, and Joe Bonamassa to AC/DC, Elvis, the Beatles, and Frank Sinatra.

Biscuit Miller’s CD “Come Together” is one of the best independent CD's I have heard in a long time. Slick, funky, bluesy, and thoughtful, all at the same time. Biscuit isn't only a great bassist, but he's an extremely soulful vocalist! He doesn't confuse shouting at the top of his lungs with singing with soul. I caught Biscuit & The Mix at Buddy Guy's Legends last night, and their show is just as tight and fun as the CD! Come Together is a refreshing and much needed change. Great job, Biscuit!

Much like predecessors New York Dolls, Stooges and Dead Boys, The Factory burned like a roman candle, then disappeared into the night. The Washington D.C. band ruled the roost for a stint in the late 80's/early 90's, opening for Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Public Image, Ltd., and Johnny Thunders - turning the heads of both fans and music industry reps along the East Coast.

Led by Vance Bockis (formerly of The Obsessed, 9353 and doom metal gods Pentagram), The Factory ratcheted through songs of juvenile lust, drugs and working class bravado. They were a brash extension of late 1970's Rolling Stones, picking up where the strut and sneer of Some Girls and Tattoo You left off, creating an explosive concoction of straight ahead Rock n' Roll, Punk and R&B.

Despite drawing large crowds and wowing A&R reps, The Factory's lifestyle always walked the tightrope and in the end, they just couldn't keep it together. Like many before (and after) him, Bockis was brought down by his demons and faded into the dark alley of heroin addiction. Bockis was all but written off as another drug casualty of the early 1990's, even prompting future Foo Fighter Dave Grohl's D.C. punk band Scream to write a song about him called "GLC," which stood for "Good Lookin' Corpse".

"It wasn't easy growing up in the murder capitol of the United States," says Bockis, with a wicked sense of humor and amphetamine eye, "if I spent time in a white suburban middle-class environment, we'd probably ended up sounding like Musak."

Eventually, Bockis defied the odds and got clean. Unfortunately, the band didn't survive the turmoil and went their separate ways in 1992, drummer Mark Kermanj joining influential industrial rockers Chemlab and Scott Satorius joining Tesco Vee's Hate Police, fronted by the former singer of The Meatmen.

Fast forward to 2010 - The original cassette tape that Factory guitarist Robbie Limon gave to who would become the founder of Acetate Records at the 9:30 Club in 1990 stayed with him for 20 years. “It was battered and worn by the time I made a digital archive to preserve what was left of it. I thought The Factory would be another band with nothing to show they even existed, nothing to seek out on eBay, nothing to find in a used record store - like L.A.'s Coma-tones, or Detroit's Torpedoes or Motor City Bad Boys.”

After many futile online searches over the years he finally stumbled onto a clip of The Factory from a cable access show posted on YouTube by bassist Scott Sartorius. They discussed releasing a record and miraculously were able to locate the 20 year old masters in various studios around DC.

"Self Submission" starts the record with the subtlety of an alarm clock, Bockis barking and sneering over tight rhythms, while closer "Six Feet Down" is a warning shot of things to come in a lifestyle pushed too far. In between, they effortlessly explore seedy, drugged-out, and sometimes majestic side of the city. From the disco-tinged "Love To Dance" to the melancholy "Misfortune Son", The Factory capture the gritty pulse of the D.C. streets on their self-titled release.

Be a part of this historic comeback by catching The Factory live at the Surf Club on Thursday April 21. The show starts at 9pm with exciting sleaze hair-metal rockers Baby Jayne opening the show.

Scott Ramminger & The CrawStickers plays swing, R&B, blues, soul, N'awlins, rock, funk, jazz, and some stuff with a bit of twang. Greasy, good time music. The CrawStickers instrumentation includes vocals, sax, guitar, bass, drums, and often, piano. Extra horn players are always a possibility. We pass around the vocal duty throughout the band, and sometimes several of us chime in together. That, along with our ability to cover a wide variety of types of music, is one of the things that gives us some extra zip and helps keep things interesting. We like to mix up the styles, with an emphasis on stuff that makes you want to move. People seem to really dig our set lists, which include a few originals.
